The Bull

Little is known about the artist, Milet. He was presumably French, active late 19th-early 20th century. The power and verve of his compositions speak for themselves.

Royal Ontario Museum 976.196.1

Animal sculpture enjoyed great popularity in Europe, particularly in France during the 1830s through the early 1900s. This bronze bull is in the tradition of the French Animaliers of the 19th century, of whom Antoine Louis Barye (1796-1875) is the best known. Animal sculpture has a long history in Europe, and sculptures of bulls and other animals were known in ancient Greece and Rome. A vogue for animalier sculpture was in evidence during the Renaissance, and in the 19th century there was a full fledged revival of interest in animal sculpture.

With head lowered and turned to the right, this bull displays his strength with an economy of gesture. The pose, with his left foreleg raised in a pawing attitude while his tail sweeps around his right leg, is both dynamic and expectant.

This reproduction is made of durastone, a gypsum composition.
