Head of Aphrodite
From a Greek original in marble, ca.200 B.C.

Female heads of this type, produced during the late Hellenistic period, reflect the works of the Greek sculptor Praxiteles. He was especially famous for his statues of Aphrodite. Praxitelean influences can be seen in the soft modelling of the face and the deeply set eyes. Made of Durastone, a gypsum composition.
