An invitation to high school students to join us at the Royal Ontario Museum to celebrate African Heritage Month. During this 105-minute special event, students will participate in:

  • Dance performance and workshop (60 minutes): Shades is a thought-provoking production that tackles the multi-layered conversation of colourism. Through dance and theatre, Shades delivers empowering messages that are educational, playful and inspiring. Shades challenges the issues of discrimination by communities of colour against themselves and a group think mentality that has plagued these communities for over a century. We see countless examples of the great lengths people around the world have taken to permanently alter their skin tone in the hopes of an increased social status; but at what cost and what message does this send to the next generation of young boys and girls. Esie Mensah and the cast of Shades will ask the hard questions and encourage a conversation that shatters misconceptions while placing each of us into a position of self-empowerment, self-respect and ultimately self-love. In 2018 we aim to move our society closer towards a space of healing.
  • Guided Tour (45 minutes): Explore the broader issues of cultural identity and belonging through authentic objects and contemporary artworks in the galleries. ROM Teachers will lead students through the special exhibition Here We Are Here: Black Canadian Contemporary Art, which showcases the contemporary works of nine African Canadian artists, and the ROM galleries that reflect the diversity of African heritage.

Program availability and timing subject to change. Please note this special event will be photographed and video taped and once your booking is confirmed, we will send ROM photo/video release forms for students and teachers/adult accompanying classes.
