South Asia: 5,000 Years of Culture
South Asia is a region that includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan, and The Maldives. This object-based, interactive school case explores the ancient Indus Valley civilization, images of gods and goddesses, the architecture of the Taj Mahal, cotton-dyeing techniques and more. Students learn how to read visual symbols, understand Asian religions, ask questions, generate ideas, and how to recognize traditional art forms that are still around in our everyday environments. Activities are designed for small groups and encourage discussion, debate, and idea-sharing.
Contents: 6 activity centres, 30 specimens, teachers notes with historical time line and student project ideas, and complimentary DVD on the arts of South Asia that your school can keep for future use!
Partners in the Wilderness
Students examine the early history of the fur trade in the Ontario area. The relationship between early European settlers and Native Peoples is also explored using a selection of ROM artifacts and reproductions.
Contents: 7 Activity centres, objects of trade, including: beaver fur sample, canoe repair kit, Hudson's Bay Co. coin, museket ball and lead buckshot, 7 large activity cards, Shell Seeker's game, and teacher's notes. (Jr/Int)
People of the Northwest Coast (74 lbs) (English Only)
Students study the customs, ceremonies, and artistic heritage of the traditional culture of the Northwest Coast People. As well, the unit explores food gathering, transportation, housing and fibre technology.
Contents: 8 artifacts including an adze, fish hooks, and a basket in individual diorama boxes; picture sets with suggestions for creative activities; student activity booklets, and teacher's notes with lesson plans. (Jr/Int)
Tattoos to Toes - A cooperative learning kit
Travel to a Japanese tattoo parlour, and drop in on an ancient Egyptian party! Through the examination of a variety of artifacts and museum reproductions, students are introduced to the language and art of body decoration, across a broad spectrum of cultures and peoples.
Contents: 7 activity centres, including: scarab, Menorah ring, Byzantine cross, Thai ankle bracelet, photo cards, student activity booklets and teacher's notes. (Jr/Int)
The Inuit: People of the North (75 lbs) (English Only)
Students explore aspects of traditional Inuit life through artifacts and activities.
Contents: photographs of traditional Inuit life, artifacts and models set in dioramas, reference materials, student activity booklets, and teacher's notes. (Jr/Int)
World Garments - A cooperative learning kit
What do medieval knights and hockey players have in common? How many km of silk can a silkworm spin? What would you look like in an ancient Egyptian dress? Answer these and other fascinating questions using a variety of objects and activities, as you explore the nature of clothing and accessories from around the world.
Contents: 7 activity centres, including: Inuit doll, surgical mask, reproduction Chinese Dragon robe and Ancient Egyptian dress, Incan pendant, etc., and photocards, student activity booklets and teacher's notes. (Jr/Int)
Cases are billingual and weigh approximately 40 lbs unless otherwise indicated.
