Online Activities: Iroquoian Longhouse

Where were the corn fields?
Around the village, on the plateau and in the flood plain of the river, the Iroquoians planted their fields of corn. Corn, or maize, was grown in small mounds of earth, called corn hills. A corn field would have hundreds and even thousands of hills, in which corn was planted together with beans and squash. The corn, beans and squash were harvested in the fall, and stored in the houses to provide food for the winter.
