Online Activities: Iroquoian Longhouse
Why were Iroquoian villages built on plateaus?
By building their villages high up on a plateau, the Iroquoians were making sure their villages would be protected. Climbing up a steep embankment toward the village made the entry into the village very difficult. Iroquoians could look out and down at the land around their village, and easily spot visiters, both friendly and unfriendly, approaching the plateau.
