What is a longhouse?
Iroquoian peoples are best known for the homes they lived in, called the longhouse. These houses were called longhouses because they were longer than they were wide. They were made entirely of wood. After they were abandoned, the houses decayed (or rotted). It is the decayed remains of these wooden structures that archaeologists excavate.
