This section contains brief biographical entries for some of the people from the Age of the Pyramids. It does not give information about people who lived before 2800 BCE, or after the year 2100 BCE.

The Ancient Egyptian language had sounds that English does not, and English has some that the Ancient Egyptians did not use. Because of this, our spelling of Ancient Egyptian names is always an approximation of how the names were pronounced. You may find several different spellings for the same name. Some of these alternative spellings are noted, but you may well find others.

Kings in Ancient Egypt added at least one other name to their birth name when they were crowned. The three most important names in the Age of the Pyramids were the Horus Name, the Nesu-bity Name, and the Son of Re Name. The Horus name is written inside a rectangle with an image of the god Horus, as a hawk, on the top; this is called a serekh. Lines at the bottom of the serekh represent the walls of the palace. The Nesu-bity and Son of Re names were written in oval frames we call cartouches.

Please Note: The dates given are approximate. BCE means ‘ Before the Common Era" and is an alternative to B.C. The alternative to A.D. is CE, ‘Common Era.
