Deciduous Forest Species at Risk

The Deciduous Forest region in the extreme south of Ontario is dominated by broad-leaved tree species. Many species of plants and animals reach their northern limits in this region.

There are a total of 162 species officially designated as being at risk in this region.

  • 5 species are extinct and gone forever.
  • 11 species are extirpated and no longer exist in Ontario.
  • 75 species are endangered and close to disappearing from Ontario.
  • 37 species are threatened indicating risk of becoming endangered.
  • 34 species are of special concern who's characteristics make them sensitive to human activities or natural events.
