Tundra Species at Risk

A narrow strip along the north coast of Ontario, the Tundra consists of marshy areas and dry lichen habitat. Stunted trees are restricted to inland lakes and rivers. This is an important habitat for shorebirds and polar bears.

There are a total of 11 species officially designated as being at risk in this region.

  • 3 species are endangered and close to disappearing from Ontario.
  • 3 species are threatened indicating risk of becoming endangered.
  • 5 species are of special concern who's characteristics make them sensitive to human activities or natural events.
