TIP This guide contains the 67 most common summer birds in Peterborough County. The species are arranged by name, and the background colour of each photo gives a quick clue to the main habitat the species lives in:
  • blue = freshwater: lakes, rivers, marshes.
  • green = forest: woodlands and forest edges.
  • yellow = open habitat: grasslands, fields, farm pastures.
  • grey = urban: cities, towns, parks.

American Crow
American Crow - Corvus brachyrhynchos
Appearance: Large black bird with square wings and strong beak.
Behaviour: Scavenger, but also preys on young birds. Often seen pursued by smaller birds such as Blue Jays. Call is a loud "caw".
Habitats: Open habitat, especially open fields with scattered woods, and agricultural land.

American Goldfinch
American Goldfinch - Carduelis tristis
Appearance: Sparrow-sized yellow bird. Male is bright yellow and has a black cap and wings, female is pale yellow and does not have a black cap. In flight, wings flash black and white.
Behaviour: Seed eater, especially thistle and dandelions. Flight is bouncy and undulating. Gives song and calls in flight.
Habitats: Forest edge, old fields and urban parkland. Visits bird feeders.

American Kestrel
American Kestrel - Falco sparverius
Appearance: Robin-sized slim falcon with pointed wings and narrow tail. Chestnut back and pale, spotted front; head looks large for the body and has black stripe running vertically through eye. Up close, male has blue on wings, female has brown.
Behaviour: Perches on power lines watching for insects and small mammals. Hovers above grass before diving on prey.
Habitats: Open habitat, especially grasslands, woodland edges and roadsides.
