Discover Toronto with ROM Walks

26th year of free, guided walking tours of Toronto’s history

Discover Toronto’s unique architecture and rich history through ROM Walks, a series of free, guided walking tours of the city. From May to September each year, tour leaders from the Royal Ontario Museum’s (ROM) Department of Museum Volunteers will lead the public through some of Toronto’s distinctive landmarks and neighbourhoods. Last year, the 25th Anniversary year, a record 2,864 guests attended the free walks. The 26th series kicks off on Sunday, May 7 at 2 pm when the public may visit The Grange Neighbourhood, in the Dundas St. and McCaul St. area of Toronto, known for the Art Gallery of Ontario, George Brown House, St. George the Martyr and The Grange.

In 1980, when the ROM was closed for renovations, an exciting new concept was born: ROM Walk. On June 24, 1980 ROM Walk was officially opened by Mayor of Toronto John Sewell with the ROM’s Director, Dr. Jim Cruise. The very first walk given, called City Core, continues today as Heart of Toronto. Today there are 18 walks (with up to 14 different walks given per season) along with two to three ROM Walks Plus. And the repertoire continues to expand.

ROM Walks take place on most Sundays at 2 pm and Wednesdays at 6 pm and last for one to two hours. Look for the blue ROM umbrella at the starting point of every ROM Walk. For a complete schedule of ROM Walks, ROM Walks Plus, meeting points and highlights please see ROM Programs. The tours are free to the public, with the exception of private group walks and ROM Walk Plus (see below). Please call 416.586.8097 for additional information.

ROM Walk Plus Schedule:
Two of our walks will only be offered as ROM Walk Plus walks in 2006. Each of these paid walks costs $10 per person with all proceeds going to the Museum. What’s the Plus? That’s a secret but all funds raised will help support the ROM. Hidden Treasures: Sculpture in the City was created and introduced in 2005. It will be offered again in 2006 as a paid walk. Along the Front will complete the 2006 season as a paid walk. This walk has been updated with new details and buildings. Advance registration is required. Please call 426.586.5799 to reserve tickets.

Private Group Walks:
Private group walks are available year round by special request for clubs, community groups, visitors and families. Group walks are $10 per person with a $100 minimum charge. Please call 416.586.8097 for more information.
