Mysteries of Ancient Ukraine: The Remarkable Trypilian Culture (5400-2700 BC)
Krzysztof Ciuk, Editor
ROM 2008, 9" x 12", 256 pages
Soft Cover, $60, ISBN 978-0-88854-465-0

Nestled in the forest steppes of what is now Ukraine, the Neolithic-Bronze Age culture known as Trypilia built the largest settlements in Old Europe, some with an estimated population of 10,000 to 15,000 people. The Trypilians were pre-eminent as ceramicists, their creations ranging from amphorae to plates, bowls, spoons, jewelry, models of houses, and figurines of women. It is believed that the culture's many ceramic female figurines are linked to an agrarian cult of fertility. This full-colour publication coincides with the ROM exhibition of the same name (November 29, 2008 - March 22, 2009).
