| For many months of the year the sea and
tundra are blanketed with ice and snow. The main method of transportation in these
conditions was sledges pulled by dogs.
In the archaeological record, dog sledges and associated
equipment appear with the early Thule culture and following AD 1000 were surely
instrumental in the rapid spread of Thule peoples across the Arctic.
