Hudson Strait Type Kayak
Made of wood, sealskin, and sinew

The bow of this kayak type sits deep in the water. The bottom curves up toward the stern. This feature will turn the kayak into the wind when stopped – an ideal hunting position to wait for animals to appear.

Characteristic of this kayak type, its maximum width occurs behind the cockpit, giving it a full stern. The combination of wide stern, side-to-side flat bottom, and flared sides provided good stability.

This example from the ROM’s collection is seen fully equipped with all the gear necessary for going hunting.
