| For
more than one thousand years, the kayak (Qajaq
in Inuktitut) played a vital role in the hunting technology
of the eastern Arctic peoples.
This watercraft was traditionally made of
sealskin over a bone or wood frame and could vary in size
or design depending on intended use. Combined with various
hunting implements and tools secured on top, it made a very
efficient system for catching animals.
The kayak played a fundamental role in Inuit animal interactions
– bringing home food, skins, oil, ivory, and bone necessary to sustain the
hunter, his family, and his community.
Today in some parts of the eastern Arctic it is still
used for hunting, but in general it has become more of a recreational craft.
