In 1840, Scottish whaling Captain William Penny sailed into Cumberland Sound and found a vast richness of bowhead whales.

The foreigners and the Inuit developed economic and social relationships that influenced change in Inuit culture.

Is this ring-around-a-rosie or a circle of lonely sailors? In an effort to interest European buyers, Inuit carvers during the historic era took inspiration from their immediate surroundings and often created representations with little personal meanings.
