The ringed seal (map)
and bearded seal (map)
are extremely important in the Inuit economy. Available throughout the eastern
Canadian Arctic, seal meat is a staple food for the Inuit and also essential as
dog food. Ringed sealskins have been valued for clothing, kayak and tent covers,
lashings, dog whips, and dog harnesses. Seal oil has also been valued as lamp
fuel.
