In
our language, Inuktitut, there is no word for catching
an animal.
Our elders teach us that the animals give themselves based
upon the respect they are shown by the hunter. The Inuit and the animals strive
to maintain a state of balance and harmony.
Respectful practice that ensures balance and harmony
includes ...
- generosity with the animals,
- allowing the land to heal,
- only taking what is needed,
- respecting taboos and rituals,
- being careful not to waste, and
- proper treatment of animal remains.
An important image to us that represents balance and harmony is an open hand with
a hole through the palm. The open hand signifies the ability to gain sustenance
from the land and sea, but the hole signifies that we should share our harvests
with other creatures to sustain the cycle of life.
