". . . Thomasee who appeared this noon, seated himself on a chair in the porch and (did not cough) waited . . . . I knew that he had the ivory kayak with him and intended at his good time to present it for my inspection. . . .
Finally I left him to his own good time, returned to my book in the sitting room and left him. After about a half an hour he appeared at the kitchen door, giggling, wondering with the article wrapped (they always wrap ivory) in newsprint. I examined it and praised it and the deal commenced."
