Institute for Contemporary Culture

About the ICC

The Institute for Contemporary Culture stimulates diverse audiences to think creatively, understand and change the world. Inspired by the mission and collections of the Royal Ontario Museum, the ICC examines living societies and the natural world, linking the present to the past through innovative exhibitions and the creation of dynamic original content using new technologies.

In addition, a roster of public events, such as the annual Eva Holtby Lecture on Contemporary Culture, film series, debates and performances further explore relevant themes addressed in ICC exhibitions and stimulate public conversations. The ROM's extensive collections of world cultures and natural history through the ages add context, meaning and depth to these engaging discussions of contemporary ideas.

History

In 1989, the Royal Ontario Museum founded the ICC as a vehicle to present exhibitions of a contemporary nature to enhance the Museum’s exhibition program. Exhibitions were presented on an ad hoc basis, averaging one per year. In 2005, with the building of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, the ROM placed the ICC in a more prominent position and gave it a clearer mandate. As the ROM’s laboratory of new ideas, the new ICC has produced exhibitions on subjects ranging from street art and homelessness, to contemporary Canadian First Nations art and modern celebrity culture.

The ICC’s major exhibitions are hosted in the Roloff Beny Gallery. Perched dramatically at the top of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal on Level 4, this large multimedia gallery is among the ROM’s most dramatic rooms, with its geometric angled walls, a soaring ceiling height of more than 35 feet and a triangular floor plan.
