On August 30, 2012 I posted a blog on the rediscovery of a very striking and important ancient Roman amethyst gem engraved with the image of Victory writing on a shield, dating to about 50 BC to AD 25. I also mentioned that the gem was in the collection of Sir Francis Cook by 1903. The posting paid off! A government of Canada and Ontario press conference was held this morning at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) to announce major infrastructure improvements, which include $1.4M in funding for the repair to the ROM’s roof.

These renovations will enhance the visitor experience at the ROM, and increase the museum’s functional lifespan. The funds allotted to the ROM will be the first project in a joint plan to invest more than $220 million in initiatives to improve various projects across Ontario and Canada.

So this weekend @ROMToronto? Kind of a big deal. On Saturday we’re covering all things archaeology and Sunday we’re doing the same with palaeontology. Maybe the two best ologies!

Posting by Danielle Megaffin, Intern with the ROM's communications department

The stars of the Canadian entertainment news show eTalk recently shot a promo segment onsite at the ROM.

Ben Mulroney, Tanya Kim, Traci Melchor, Danielle McGimsie, Lainey Lui, and Jessi Cruickshank spent a day in the ROM’s Thorsell Spirit House to film promos for TIFF. ROM visitors were delighted to catch glimpses of the stars as they toured throughout the Museum.

It’s one of the most interesting jobs at the ROM – the museum artist. Working in a studio soaked in natural light, Georgia Guenther creates replicas of objects in the collection and other artistic displays you may see inside the galleries. She works closely with curators to ensure her creations are both scientifically accurate and realistic.

We stopped by the studio to ask Georgia a few questions about her role at the ROM.
