Matthews Family Court of Chinese Sculpture

Level 1, Philosophers’ Walk Wing
Walk among impressive large sculptures in stone, bronze, iron, ceramic, and wood in this new gallery spanning 2,000 years of Chinese sculptural art. The gallery also features smaller objects exploring the stylistic development of Buddhist sculptures, deities in Chinese religion, and the development of Judaism, Islam and Christianity in China from the 3rd to 19th centuries AD.

The gallery opens eastward, through the Sir Edmund Osler Gate, into the newly renovated Samuel HallCrownCurrelly Gallery and the Rotunda in the Weston Wings, creating a beautiful vista, from east to west between the historic buildings.

The gallery is named after the Matthews Family, in recognition of a generous gift from Judy and Wilmot Matthews.

The Matthews Family Chinese Sculpture Court is one of four galleries featuring Chinese art and archaeology. The expanded and redesigned Chinese galleries also include the Bishop White Gallery of Chinese Temple Art, the Joey and Toby Tanenbaum Gallery of China, and the ROM Gallery of Chinese Architecture.
