About the Exhibition
The ROM is pleased to present Water: The Exhibition - a ground-breaking exploration of life’s most precious resource.
Developed by the American Museum of Natural History in New York with enhanced Canadian content from the Royal Ontario Museum, this exhibition takes visitors on a journey around the world to examine both the scientific and cultural importance of water.
Essential learning for every Canadian, this exhibition uses hands-on activities, live animals and multi-media displays to demonstrate the importance of water and what you and your family can do to help protect the future of our blue planet.
The key message of the exhibition is that water is essential to life. It connects all living things. But earth's water is finite—this is all there has ever been, or will ever be.
We can all take action today to revitalize life’s most precious resource—water.
Hands-On Activities
Water: The Exhibition includes:
- 19 interactive experiences including a dramatic fog curtain evoking a waterfall, a video microscope where visitors can view the microorganisms that inhabit a single drop of water, and a chance to create virtual rain.
- 6 video stations throughout the exhibition.
- 12 live animal displays, including a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake, a Gila Monster, newts, fishes and frogs!
Canadian Content
As the sole Canadian venue for the exhibition’s world tour, the ROM has created over 20 specially marked areas informing visitors of the many ways global water issues are present locally and affect every Canadian. The exhibition features:
- Canadian deep sea corals, aquatic endangered species, invasive species and life forms that have adapted to a glacial landscape.
- Positive initiatives: the regeneration of Lake Simcoe, as well as local projects such as youth programs and rain barrel use.
- Toronto water systems today - and Toronto in the past. (Did you know that 450 million years ago, this land was flooded with salty subtropical water?)
- What the imagination sees: water in Canadian art and culture.
