Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008

Vanity Fair Portraits brings together a star-studded array of almost 150 iconic photographs from both its vintage period and modern periods. The exhibition is divided into two parts, 1913-36, the magazine’s early period, and 1983 to the present. This glamorous photographic history of portraiture features such legends as Madonna, Tom Cruise, Bette Davis, Ernest Hemingway, Louis Armstrong and Cary Grant and works by master photographers including Edward Steichen and Annie Leibovitz.
Vanity Fair Portraits was created to celebrate the 2008 25th anniversary of the modern Vanity Fair and the 95th anniversary of its founding in 1913. A collaboration between Vanity Fair and the National Portrait Gallery, London, the exhibition is curated by Terence Pepper, Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, and David Friend, Vanity Fair’s Editor of Creative Development. The ROM will be the only Canadian venue to display Vanity Fair Portraits, and this will be its first showing in eastern North America.
