Position As Desired / Exploring African Canadian Identity: Photographs from the Wedge Collection
Closed
October 2, 2010 to March 27, 2011
Sigmund Samuel Gallery of Canada, Level 1
26 works of art by photo-based artists examine evolving African Canadian identity, through memory, language, representation, community and history. The exhibition includes pioneering and audacious early works by Buseje Bailey, David Zapparoli, Michael Chambers, and Stella Fakiyesi. Emerging contemporary photographers Christina Leslie, Megan Morgan, Dawit L. Petros, and Stacey Tyrell defy labels while they celebrate the growth and diversity of the African Canadian community.
Position As Desired is also an intervention in the museum space, intended to destabilize embedded limitations on the positioning of black experiences in Canada.
