Toronto's Carnival: Festival Photographs from 1967 to Today

Closed
July 16 to August 1, 2011
Hilary and Galen Weston Wing, Level 2

IIn 1967, a new Caribbean festival burst onto the Toronto scene. Historically connected to emancipation, the internationally renowned carnival is now deeply rooted in the city. Now in its 44th year, this has become the largest of its kind in North America when Toronto explodes with the pulsating rhythms and melodies of calypso, soca, reggae, steel pan and brass bands.

Toronto's Carnival: Festival Photographs from 1967 to Today is a unique exhibition that celebrates and showcases the vibrant history of the festival and Caribbean culture in Toronto. Archival photographs and film footage from the first years are juxtaposed with recent photographs by Toronto artist Nation Cheong. This results in a portrait of striking continuity in the midst of remarkable change, and creates nostalgic connections to the many dimensions of the Carnival experience.
