Our oceans cover over 70% of the planet’s surface and are vital to all forms of life, including humans. From moderating our climate and weather to influencing our fresh water and soil cycles, they provide primary sustenance to over 2 billion people. With more coastline than any other country in the world, protecting our oceans is crucial to Canada’s future. As they become increasingly threatened by climate change, pollution, and overfishing, Canada has committed to becoming a global leader in marine protection by pledging to permanently safeguard 10% of its ocean by 2020, as agreed to under international targets.
