Shreyas and Mina Ajmera Gallery of Africa
The Americas, and Asia-Pacific, Level 3
Walk along the edge of the gallery and turn left. Take the exit to your left (past the metal grates) and enter the Africa, the Americas, and Asia Pacific gallery. The kuyu puppets are on the first display to your left in the Africa section.
These wooden Kuyu Puppets were made in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 1960s and used in puppet plays locally and in neighboring countries.
Do any of our puppets look familiar? One of them was carved with the features of Elvis Presley. The character in this play called for a king so the artist thought, why not Presley, the king of Rock and Roll!
