Contract Assistant Curator - Mesopotamia

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is Canada’s pre-eminent international museum and houses important collections in World Cultures and Natural History ( The ROM is currently developing a major blockbuster exhibition focused on Mesopotamia to debut in June 2013.  The ROM is pleased to invite applications for the position of Contract Assistant Curator, to assist with this Mesopotamia exhibition.  This is an entry-level, 2.5 month term-limited curatorial position.

The successful applicant will join the Ancient Near East section of the ROM’s Department of World Cultures. She/He will assist the Associate Curator of Ancient Near East in the development of the new Mesopotamia exhibit. The successful candidate will work closely with the coordinating curator and other exhibit specialists to compile and edit text and audio/visual content, research and develop 30 factoids for the exhibit, consult on artifact mounts, among other administrative duties. The incumbent will offer themselves as a resource for exhibit programming departments (development and implementation). The incumbent will be available to prepare for media presentations.

 Term:  The position will begin in April 2013 and terminate June 2013, coincident with the opening of the exhibit at the ROM. Salary is based $46,820 per annum.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a minimum of a Master’s degree in Near Eastern Archaeology with a familiarity with Mesopotamian archaeology and its history at the time of appointment.  Some knowledge of French and German is desirable.  A history of research and peer-reviewed publication on aspects of Mesopotamia is preferred.
