Sunday April 22 is Earth Day, but we’re celebrating Mother Earth all weekend! We’re super excited to welcome Barbara Reid, the popular children’s author and plasticine artist extraordinaire, as a special guest this weekend. She is leading workshops for kids, teaching families how to make their own plasticine art (Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 am and 2 pm). She will also be signing her new book Picture a Tree and you can see a display of some of Ms.

Earth Weekend is coming fast, and we couldn’t be more excited!  The interactive workshop with Barbara Reid will be amazing, but the Hands-on team from the Keenan Family Gallery of Hands-on Biodiversity is also preparing many more fun and interactive events for the second floor.

Five months of planning, three partners, one event.

Expectations were high for the WWF-Canada and ROM exhibit, presented by Loblaw Companies Limited, at the 2012 Green Living Show at the Direct Energy Centre, Toronto, April 13-15. “Canada’s Oceans and You” did not disappoint.

Here in the Hands-on Galleries, we care greatly about our trees, which is why we’re so excited about the Earth Weekend events coming up on April 21 and 22nd! In the spirit of the weekend, the ROM Hands-On team thought we’d share our favourite facts about some of the most interesting trees in the ROM’s collections:

In celebration of Archaeology Weekend on April 14 and 15, we have interviewed a few ROM archaeologists. Dan Rahimi works in the Middle East studying the period around the beginnings of settled societies around 10 to 5 thousand years ago, he is also the ROM’s Vice President of Gallery Development.

As part of Archaeology Weekend on April 14 and 15 we will be putting on a small display of objects from out of the ROM’s vaults.  We are calling it Treasures of the Danube: Enigmatic Objects from Balkan Prehistory.

Packing and transporting over 50 specimens from the ROM to the Direct Energy Centre at the Exhibition grounds for the Canada’s Oceans and You: An Interactive Exhibition at the Green Living Show is not a simple task. Days of preparation happen: models are placed delicately in or on packing material, real taxidermy specimens must be cleaned and crated, and all are loaded neatly into trucks.
