Description
The vast majority of animals on Earth lack backbones. Despite their unrivalled dominance, these invertebrate animals are often overlooked by students. In the lab students will describe and classify a wide variety of real invertebrate specimens including insects, molluscs, sea stars, and corals. A visit to the Schad Gallery of Biodiversity will reinforce the importance of invertebrates to the stability of natural systems and students will assess the positive and negative relationships between human and invertebrate populations.
Curriculum links: assess human impacts on biodiversity, and identify ways of preserving biodiversity; investigate the characteristics of living things, and classify diverse organisms according to specific characteristics; demonstrate an understanding of biodiversity, its contributions to the stability of natural systems, and its benefits to humans.
