Managing Director, ROM Ancient Cultures

Area: ROM Ancient Cultures, Ancient Cultures

Rae Ostman is managing director for ROM Ancient Cultures.

I work with staff at the museum and partner organizations to create programs, exhibitions, digital media, and other projects that help us learn about civilizations of the past and their relevance today. On any given day, this can mean going into the storage rooms with ROM curators to choose archaeological artifacts to share with museum visitors, meeting with researchers at the University of Toronto to talk about projects we’re working on together, or making a web page to give people around the world a chance to participate in what we do.

Before joining the ROM, I worked in museums in the US, including the Sciencenter in Ithaca, NY and the Exploratorium in San Francisco. I also earned a PhD in anthropological archaeology from New York University. At the ROM, I use my experience in museums and archaeology to create opportunities to learn about ancient cultures and connect with other people.
