For over a decade, the ROM has steadily acquired the work of contemporary Canadian artists who are part of the South Asian diaspora. Such collecting is important not only to provide points of context and contrast with ROM’s historical South Asian collections, but also to preserve the complexities and fullness of contemporary artistic production.
With the announcement of three new Martian Meteorites in the ROM’s planetary science collection, recent evidence of flowing water on Mars, and of course, the success of the Hollywood movie “The Martian”, it seems fitting to sit down and take a closer look at the Red Planet.
Recently, the ROM Green Plant Herbarium accessioned a copy of the artwork STRATA into its collection. This might seem unusual, since our herbarium is the depository for over half a million scientific specimens of green plants, from algae through mosses and liverworts to all the different kinds of “plants with plumbing.” Nevertheless, STRATA is intended to resemble a group of herbarium specimens in the way it was produced and in its format.
