Paul Kane: Truth and Mysteries

Between 1844 and 1848, the iconic Canadian painter Paul Kane spent 37 months travelling in the wilds of northwestern Ontario and ultimately along the fur-trade routes all the way to the Pacific Ocean and back again. He returned with 600 sketches, which formed the basis for the next eight years of creating oil paintings in his Toronto studio.  How do these final works compare to his field sketches? Are they accurate representations of what he saw? Is there a story to be told by looking beneath the surface layers of his painted canvases?

Every year, thousands of migrating birds encounter urban environments on their way to breeding or feeding grounds.  Birds mistake the reflection in buildings for habitat during the day, and are attracted to light at night - both situations cause an estimated 1 million bird deaths per year in Toronto alone.

Canada

The Centre of Discovery for Canada is unique, focusing on culture and nature, while encouraging interpretations based on the convergence of both. Canada’s heritage is one of diverse cultures and deep roots, originally defined by Aboriginal cultures and subsequently by English and French arrivals, and later by a mosaic of international immigration.
