The National Institute of Design (NID)

Senior Preparator, Bob Walsh was asked to give a talk on his specialty, exhibit lighting design, by the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, India. http://www.nid.edu/ Bob has been there for over a week now and here is his second post from India.

I thought it would be useful to describe a little bit about NID, my hosts for this trip. NID was founded by the Government of India in 1961. Benefactors Gautam and Gira Sarabhai were a major force along with Charles and Ray Eames, who had toured India in the late 1950's and provided the Eames report to the government of India.

The Sarabhais adopted the educational philosophy of the Bauhaus, that is, "learning by doing", and that approach continues today. The main campus at Paldi, Ahmedabad reflects the Bauhaus in its architecture as well.
