As Bollywood fever grips the GTA in anticipation of the International Indian Film Awards (IIFA) at the end of June, the Royal Ontario Museum has jumped on the bandwagon by displaying two exhibitions of Indian popular culture.

Bollywood Cinema Showcards and Embellished Reality are complemented by a host of diverse programming planned by the ROM’s Institute for Contemporary Culture (ICC). The Friends of South Asia and ICC are particularly excited to present Bollywood, Hollywood, and Beyond on June 22. It brings together screen legend Shabana Azmi, award-winning poet, lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar, actor Kabir Bedi, actress (and fellow Torontonian!) Lisa Ray and producer Ajay Virmani in a panel discussion that explores experiences of Bollywood and Hollywood – from the source! Preceded by a VIP reception in c5 Restaurant Lounge, the event promises the rare chance to mingle with the panelists – and perhaps sneak a photo op!

The FSA is thrilled to see such beautiful representations of South Asian art and culture being displayed and celebrated at one of North America’s finest museums. It is our aim to support the ROM’s South Asian collection as well as the endeavours of curator Dr. Deepali Dewan. We are proud to see these incredible exhibitions come to fruition during the summer of South Asia at the Museum.

It is an exciting time in Toronto. Whether you are a long-time Bollywood movie buff, a South Asian art enthusiast or a newbie enthralled by the richness of South Asian culture, don’t let the summer go by without visiting both exhibitions. Come to the ROM to experience a culture that has taken the world by storm.
