Session 2: Summer Club 2011 Heats Up!
Things heat up at Summer Club with a waterfight as campers cool off.
By Jovanna Scorsone, Program Coordinator ROMkids Studio and Camp Director of ROM Summer Club.
In one of the hottest summers on record, Summer Club made the most of it and had a sizzling session 2! Summer Club “Beat the Heat” with a camp-wide water fun extravaganza, armed with water balloons, wet sponges and spray bottles. The heat inspired two of our World Beat group’s new songs, Heat Wave and Hot Days. After practicing with the whole camp in the mornings, we might all find ourselves singing the refrain of one for the rest of the year: “Hot days, hot days, hoty-oty-ot days…”
When not outside, kids chilled in the galleries learning about Natural History and World Cultures. Dino Dictionary flew through galleries like pterosaurs (they worked those pinkie finger wings!), Nature Nuts buzzed like bees, and Mighty Mariners became deep sea angler fish. Anthropology 101 perfected their stone tool making abilities, ROM Sport learned the skills of the ninja, and Go Medieval became knights in shining armour.
The session ended with an amazing performance full of rhythm and colour, comedy and fun, all based on what ROMedy (and special musical guest World Beat) learned about theatre and music across time and culture using the ROM’s galleries. Their Bollywood-inspired dance routine will go down in Summer Club history!
Two sessions down, and only three to go. The summer is speeding by, but we’re having fun making new friends, and learning just how cool the Museum can be.
