Royal Processions and Rural Replicas: Monumental Card-weaving in Ethiopia (the Gondar Hanging)

Friends of Textiles & Costume Event

Dr. Gervers is a medieval and art historian at the University of Toronto. His current interest has taken him to Ethiopia where he studies the ancient Orthodox Christian rock-cut and monolithic churches. These neglected churches contain rare and beautiful treasures such as the so-called Gondar hanging, a circa 1730 AD ROM treasure donated to the museum in 1922. His presentation will focus on these great card-woven or tablet hangings and their iconography.
