ROM Biodiversity’s Wildlife Family Day Weekend!

This year’s family programming delivers a first-hand exploration of ROM Biodiversity!

Live animals, crafts, storytelling and our Early Learners Lounge – all inspired by our Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit and the Schad Gallery Of Biodiversity. Don’t miss the action and fun this Family Day long weekend!

Incredible insects, magnificent mammals, and rockin’ reptiles are some of the cool creatures you’ll meet this weekend at the ROM. Awaken your wild side as you learn all about the diversity of animal life. Make your own wildlife art inspired by the live animals you’ve met, hear animal tales from around the world, and see how you can protect animal habitats every day!

Free with Museum admission. Special family programs run 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM unless otherwise noted. More information to come!

Sciensational Sssnakes!!
Canada Court, Level 1
Think snakes are slimy? You might be surprised to learn they aren't slimy at all! Discover this and so much more as you get up close to the world of our slithery neighbours and other reptile friends!

  • Sciensational Sssnakes!! was created in 1994 after Jenny Pearce and Jeff Hathaway graduated from the University of Guelph. The organization provides hands-on educational programs for all ages about reptiles and amphibians. In a typical year, they present about 250 educational programs at venues throughout Ontario, reaching an estimated 25,000 people with their messages about reptile conservation and its challenges.

Ontario Specialized Species Centre

Meet a rotation of live hawks, falcons, owls and even bats and learn about the wonders of flying animals!

  • Established in 1987, the Ontario Specialized Species Centre is a registered charitable organization dedicated to promoting the conservation of threatened and endangered species through its educational and breeding programs. Located in the Kawartha's, the Centre is home to over 300 animals such as birds of prey and bats

Create Your Own Animal Silhouette Scene

Almost as fascinating as the animals we see in nature, are the places that we find them. Design and create your own animal silhouette scene, which shows the background can be just as interesting as the foreground.

Make A Serpent Bracelet
Eaton Gallery of Rome, Level 3
Animals have long been an inspiration to ancient cultures. Whether they were made into sculptures or shown on mosaics, you can find many animals represented in the ancient world. This weekend we'll let the Ancient Romans inspire us as we transform household materials into serpent bracelets!

Early Learners Lounge

An under 5 family lounge that provides a quiet space for families to rest, nurse, change diapers and play.

Listen to the Night: Bats of Ontario Travelling Exhibit
Canada Court, Level 1
This exhibition explores the elusive creatures that fly around in the Ontario night, intriguing for their mysterious combination of bird-and mammal-like qualities. Objects of human fascination, bats have inhabited the night skies for more than 50 million years. This exhibition looks at the reality of these creatures—the truth behind the myths and fables that have evolved in the human imagination for centuries.

Community Curators
Canada Court, Level 1
Join us in celebrating the meaning of community, through a photography display developed by children aged 6 to 13! In collaboration with Arts for Children and Youth and the Jane and Finch Boys and Girls Club.

Storytelling Corner
Hands-On Biodiversity Gallery, Level 2
Listen to animal tales from around the world with Chris Cavanagh. Stories at 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM.

Animal Explorers
Animal Explorers provides a series of fun scavenger hunts for kids ages 12 and under! Children can team up with one of our cuddly Animal Explorers and take them along as they explore the ROM. Runs out of the Hands-On Gallery on Saturday and the Earth Rangers Studio on Sunday and Monday, both located on Level 2.

Keep your eye out for the opportunity to meet one of our dino mascots during your visit!

  • Earth Rangers: Great Lakes Show (11 AM, 11:30 AM, 12 PM, and 1 PM.)
    Schad Gallery of Biodiversity, Level 2
    Each 20-minute engagement focuses on one of Canada’s most beautiful natural wonders: the Great Lakes. The show highlights several key issues that are affecting the health of this remarkable system, and what we can do to help preserve it. Featuring stunning imagery of the Great Lakes and appearances from live Animal Ambassadors.
