Member Reception: Raja Deen Dayal Revealed

ROM Members' only Reception.   Registraton is required.  Space is limited.

ROM Members are invited to join us for a special lecture and book launch of Raja Deen Dayal: Artist-Photographer in Nineteenth-Century India (ACP in association with Mapin, 2013) written by Dr. Deepali Dewan, ROM Senior Curator, South Asian Gallery, and Dr. Deborah Hutton, Associate Professor of Asian and Islamic Art History at the College of New Jersey.

Following the lecture and booking signing, Members are invited to join us at a reception in the European Rotunda for an opportunity to chat with the speakers and to have an intimate viewing of Dayal's work.

Registration is required for both the lecture and reception.  Please reqister for each separately.

Dr. Dewan and Dr. Hutton will discuss their research and insights into Raja Deen Dayal (1844-1905), known as India's Prince of Photographers, putting his life and art into context against the backdrop of 19th century India and revealing his role in fashioning a new identity for the emerging nation. Rahaab Allana, a specialist in Indian photography and curator at the Alkazi Collection in New Delhi, gives an overview of the history of Indian photography, connecting the archive with contemporary practice.


Rahaab Allana is Curator of The Alkazi Collection of Photography, New Delhi, and Editor-in-chief of PIX, an independent photography quarterly that presents the work of young photographers on a given theme.

ROM Senior Curator Dr. Deepali Dewan is an art historian with a special interest in the visual cultures of South Asia, and author of Embellished Reality: Indian Painting Photographs.


Dr. Deborah Hutton is Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Art History at The College of New Jersey, and author of The Art of the Court of Bijapur.
