Chanukah, the eight day festival of light begins on the eve of the 25th during the Jewish month of Kislev and celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.
More than twenty-one centuries ago, the Holy Land was ruled by the Seleucids who sought to forcefully Hellenize the people of Israel. Against all odds a small band of faithful Jews defeated one of the mightiest armies on earth, drove the Seleucids from the land, reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and rededicated it to the service of God.
The oil in he Temple lasted for eight days and so to commemorate and publicize these miracles the sages instituted the festival of Chanukah.
Experience Chanukah in the ROM's Ancient Greek Galleries. Share the past through stories, access to special objects, games and crafts in this exciting exploration of Jewish culture.
