DANCE: Behind the Mask

Choreographer and Artistic Director of Tribal Crackling Wind, Peter Chin, joins with celebrated dancer Chy Ratana from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to create a dance work exploring the multiple layers that both hide and reveal the soul - whether a traditional dance mask, or the glass between a viewer and the photo of the portrayed. Chy Ratana's appearance is presented in association with Amrita Performing Arts Cambodia.

Performances will take place in the Roloff Beny Gallery on Level 4 of the ROM at 7:15 and 8:45 pm.

Biography for Chy Ratana

Chy Ratana (Leak) graduated from the Secondary School of Fine Arts with a Baccalaureate in 2000, specializing in the monkey role of the Lakhaon Kaol (Cambodian male masked dance) form and in 2012 was awarded a BA degree in choreographic arts at the Royal University of Fine Arts, Phnom Penh. In 2006, Leak developed a strong interest in contemporary dance and since then has been a featured dancer in works by various choreographers including Emmanuèle Phuon and Arco Renz which have toured internationally. Leak has performed in two works by Peter Chin including Transmission of the Invisible and Olden New Golden Blue; both of which have toured extensively in Canada and Asia. He remains faithful to his traditional skills but he is also eager to further develop as a contemporary dancer and choreographer. Leak also enjoys performing as an actor and was recently a featured character in Loy 9 a new Cambodian TV drama.
