TORONTO, November 6, 2015—The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) will present its annual Eva Holtby Lecture on Contemporary Culture on November 10, 2015 at 7:00 pm featuring H.E. Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, President of the Sharjah Art Foundation. In her talk, “Art and Culture in the Gulf”, Al Qasimi will discuss her experiences injecting contemporary approaches into a region with a traditionally conservative culture to make Sharjah a globally recognized creative hub.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Eva Holtby Lecture, “Art and Culture in the Gulf” will be streamed internationally through Synaptop, a platform that allows users to watch live events, participate in the discussion, and share content with their own online communities.

We are delighted to collaborate with the ROM in showcasing Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi's work through Synaptop's live events platform: Synaparty. Her efforts to inspire and elevate culture from Sharjah have allowed countless artists to share their vision on a global stage. Synaparty reflects Al Qasami's goal of giving content creators and audiences across the globe a way to interact with each other and share ideas.” Sami Siddique, President & CEO, Synaptop

Al Qasimi visits Toronto at a time when the City’s arts and culture community is thriving. Her talk focusses on the evolution of the Sharjah Art Biennial, founded in 1993, into a diverse and program-filled foundation that supports artists worldwide. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A between Al Qasimi and Murray Whyte, Toronto Star art critic and cultural journalist.

The Eva Holtby Lecture wants speakers on contemporary culture asking the questions why and why not.  Our goal is for this to encourage conversation, empathy and understanding which leads to stronger civility in a community.”  Christopher Holtby

The Eva Holtby Lecture will be available on Synaptop at no cost. To view, please visit: http://www.synaptop.com/rom-holtby-sheikha/

Tickets to attend the lecture are available at www.rom.on.ca and include a reception with Al Qasimi. Pricing: ROM Members ($18.00), General Public ($20.00), Teachers and Students ($15.00).
