An artist, a city councillor, a curator, and an artistic director all weigh in on the subject of Street Art in Toronto, exploring the interplay between street artists and institutions. Join us for this lively evening of discussion and debate, followed by
a Q & A session.

The Panelists

Adam Vaughan was born and raised in Toronto. He began his career in journalism, seeking action through raising issues that matter to communities. His career started at CKLN, a community based radio station at Ryerson Polytechnical University. Since that time, he has worked at CityTv and Metro Morning. In 1995, Adam switched from radio to television and was assigned full-time to City Hall at CBC. Adam joined CityTv in 2000 following the death of his father, Colin Vaughan, assuming his position as the political affairs reporter. For the last 6 years he has covered municipal, provincial and federal politics. He has also written for Toronto Life, The Toronto Star and Eye Weekly. Adam was elected as a Toronto City Councillor to represent Ward 20 in November 2006.

Dan Bergeron/fauxreel
Artist

Dan Bergeron, aka fauxreel, was born in Toronto’s west-end in 1975. Part social commentator, part documentarian, part agitator, Dan works to question society’s social and cultural perceptions and to connect people to each other and the landscape of the city through his large-scale, site-specific outdoor photo installations and billboard liberations. Dan studied film and sound design at Carleton University in Ottawa but credits skateboarding and graffiti for heavily influencing his re-purposing of public spaces. Engaging rather than passive, inclusive rather than codified, through his work Dan strives to portray an unmediated likeness in his subjects. In May 2009, Dan will create a new work of art for the the ROM exhibition Housepaint Phase 2: Shelter, in collaboration with CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival.

David Liss is the Artistic Director and Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art in Toronto since 2000. Previously he was Director/Curator at the Gallery of the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts in Montreal. Since 1995 he has organized numerous exhibitions of contemporary art nationally and internationally, often including "alternative" forms of art making, such as graffitti, tattoo and outsider art.

Devon Ostrom
Curator

Devon Ostrom holds an MA in curating from Goldsmiths College, University of London. His career as an organizer started at fourteen when coordinating a graffiti contest at the Central Canadian Exhibition in Ottawa. From the AGO to a mural at Kingston Penitentiary, he has since gone on to organize countless installations and exhibitions. Devon has a strong background in community organizing: he is a founder/curator of them.ca (an organization of street artists). Advocacy work includes founding the Beautiful City Billboard Fee (BCBF) - an alliance of 36 organizations working to implement a tax on billboards with the proceeds going to public art. Devon is currently a guest curator at the ROM's Institute of Contemporary Culture for Housepaint, Phase 2: Shelter, on until July 5, 2009.
