Bloody Cartoons
Documentary and Panel Discussion
March 9 at 7 pm

Karsten Kjaer's powerful documentary explores the Danish cartoon controversy surrounding the publications of twelve editorial cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, and how and why these “bloody cartoons” could whirl a small country into a confrontation with Muslims all over the world.

A discussion on the role of the press in dealing with controversial issues, censorship, and freedom of expression will follow the screening. Panelists include censorship expert Prof. Brenda Cossman, cartoonist David Anderson, and Editor Emeritus of the Toronto Star

Join us for a talk with the artist behind the work Read, a multi-media installation on display at the ROM until March 28.

After a successful residency in February 2010, Dan Perjovschi's completed exhibition is now on display for ROM visitors to enjoy. His work mixes political cartoons and graffiti to create witty and incisive commentary on political, social and cultural issues of the moment. See his global reflections on everything from the Vancouver Olympics to Niagara Falls, and everything in between. On now until August 15, 2010.

Margins is the first Canadian exhibition by acclaimed New York-based artist Joshua Neustein. Engaging visual art in a poetic reflection on writing, religion and archaeology, Neustein's project shapes a dialogue with the historical and cultural contexts of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Hamra Abbas: Read

Read is a multi-media installation, a suspended labyrinth-like wooden structure, concealing speakers playing the sound of children reciting the Qur’an as they memorize its verses, the standard method of instruction in Pakistan’s madrassahs. To learn more about this intriguing work, click here.

Opening in April - a new exhibition

Bamiyan:

(the heart that has no love/pain/generosity
is not a heart)

Opening April 3 on Level 2

A contemporary art installation in the form of an archive produced by Vancouver-based media artist Jayce Salloum and Afghan-Hazara artist Khadim Ali. Comprised of photographs, video, and miniature paintings, the exhibit examines the destruction of the colossal 6th century Buddhas of the Bamiyan Valley in Central Afghanistan by the Taliban in March, 2001. Save the date for an Artists' talk on Saturday, April 3.

Exhibition co-presented by the ICC and SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre), in collaboration with the Images Festival.
