While Arthur’s principal responsibilities at the Library & Archives are collections development and management, his research interests are more archival based. Since the mid-1990s, Arthur has been researching the origins of an Oceania artifact collection at the ROM collected by the Rev. Joseph Annand, a Canadian missionary in the New Hebrides (Vanuatu) during the latter half of the 19th century.

He has published several short articles on the ROM’s history in Rotunda, and contributed annotations for an exhibition catalogue at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto (2006), based on treasures from the ROM’s rare book collections. Programs highlighting the rare book collections are offered through ROMLife, and have featured music from the R.S. Williams Collection of rare music scores, works on architecture & design, discovery & exploration, natural history illustration, and North American First Nations.

During the 1980s Arthur completed a comprehensive bibliography of Canadian author Will R. Bird, with over 500 entries cited. The bibliography was revised in 2002 and 2005, and is currently available online.
