Natural History
The Department of Natural History comprises 12 collection and research areas: Botany, Entomology, Herpetology, Ichthyology, Invertebrate Zoology, Mammalogy, Mycology, Ornithology, Invertebrate Palaeontology, Vertebrate Palaeontology, Geology, and Mineralogy.
Staff members conduct research in areas of particular strength in our collections and where our curators have a special expertise. We are actively involved in studying the diversity, evolutionary relationships, distribution, and conservation of species; in researching and displaying fossilized plants and animals from all over the world; and in acquiring and studying the best examples of minerals, gems, meteorites and rocks from our planet and solar system.
Staff develop and interpret ROM collections through fieldwork and research, and disseminate this information through a wide range of popular and scientific publications, programs, exhibitions and galleries. Through these initiatives, our staff educate their various publics about our natural heritage and the importance and relevance of natural history collections in understanding our planet’s past, and in responding to the challenges of the future.
